14-inch MacBook Pro with M6: what Apple announced
Everything in Apple's 27 October 2026 announcement: the M6 chip, Wi-Fi 7, up to 24 hours of battery, what changed from the M5 model and what stayed the same.
The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 is Apple's new entry MacBook Pro, announced on 27 October 2026. It has a 12-core CPU, a 12-core GPU, a dual 16-core Neural Engine, up to 32GB of memory, Wi-Fi 7 and a battery Apple rates at up to 24 hours. Pre-orders opened on 28 October, and it arrives on Friday, 6 November 2026.
It is the right MacBook Pro for most people who do not need more than two external displays or 32GB of memory. It keeps the screen, the notch, the ports and the weight of the M5 model it follows. If you wanted a redesign, this is not it. If you wanted the same 14-inch MacBook Pro with a faster chip and faster wireless, it is exactly that.
What changed from the M5 model
Apple's release and the two models' tech specs pages show a short list of changes.
- CPU: 12 cores instead of 10. Apple's specs break the M6 down as 2 super cores, 4 performance cores and 6 efficiency cores; the M5 page lists 4 super cores and 6 efficiency cores.
- GPU: 12 cores instead of 10, with a Neural Accelerator in each core and what Apple calls a third-generation ray-tracing engine.
- Neural Engine: a dual 16-core Neural Engine, where the M5 had one 16-core Neural Engine.
- Memory bandwidth: up to 170GB/s on the 24GB and 32GB models. The 16GB model stays at 153GB/s, the same figure as the M5.
- Wireless: Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, up from Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.
- Storage: 1TB, 2TB or 4TB. The M5 model launched with 512GB as its smallest option.
- Software: it ships with macOS Golden Gate.
Memory options are unchanged at 16GB, 24GB or 32GB.
What Apple says it is faster at
Apple compares the M6 with a 14-inch MacBook Pro with a 10-core M5. Apple says the Neural Engine is up to 1.9x faster, and that the new Mac is up to 1.3x faster at time to first token on a large language model, at ray-traced 3D rendering and at Xcode project builds, and up to 1.2x faster at image processing. Apple also says graphics and on-device AI are faster than on M5. These are Apple's tests on chosen jobs, so read them as a ceiling, not an average. M6 vs M5 goes into the chip itself.
What did not change
This list matters as much as the first one.
- The screen. A 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR mini-LED display, 3024 by 1964 at 254 pixels per inch, 1,600 nits at peak for HDR, a contrast ratio of 1,000,000 to 1 and ProMotion refresh rates up to 120Hz. Nano-texture glass is an option.
- The notch. It stays. The Dynamic Island belongs to the separate OLED models only.
- Thunderbolt 4. Three ports, up to 40Gb/s each. The Macs with M5 Pro or M5 Max get Thunderbolt 5.
- The other ports. HDMI, the SDXC card slot, MagSafe 3 and the headphone jack, as on the M5 model.
- External displays. Up to two, over any mix of Thunderbolt and HDMI.
- The case. 0.61 inch thick and 3.4 lb, both the same as the M5 model.
No touch, no 16-inch version, no M6 Pro or M6 Max yet.
Battery and charging
Apple rates the M6 model at up to 24 hours of video streaming and up to 16 hours of wireless web browsing, from a 72.4Wh battery, and calls it the longest battery life ever in a Mac. Apple's tech specs for the M5 model list the same two figures, so on paper battery life is unchanged rather than improved.
The bigger battery story is for people on older Macs. Apple says up to 4 more hours than an M1 model and up to 14 more than an Intel MacBook Pro, with the same performance on battery as plugged in. A 70W USB-C adapter is in the box. With a 96W or higher adapter, Apple says it charges to about half in 30 minutes.
Camera, sound and the rest
- 12MP Center Stage camera with Desk View.
- A studio-quality three-mic array and a six-speaker sound system with Spatial Audio.
- Silver or space black. Apple says the space black finish has an anodization seal for fewer fingerprints.
- Touch ID and a backlit keyboard with full-height function keys.
Who it is for
Buy it if you are on an Intel MacBook Pro or an M1 and want the full jump. Apple's pitch to those upgraders is 16GB of starting memory, an extra Thunderbolt port, much longer battery life and the space black finish. It is also the sensible default if you write code, edit photos, run spreadsheets, take calls all day, or edit 4K video now and then.
Think twice if you need more than two external displays, more than 32GB of memory, Thunderbolt 5 speeds or the 16-inch screen. Those all point to the M5 Pro, and M6 or M5 Pro compares the two side by side. If you already own the M5 model, the list of changes above is the whole case for upgrading, and most people can skip this one.
If you are weighing it against the touchscreen model, M6 or the OLED MacBook Pro is the post for that.
Where it sits in the line-up
The M6 does not replace everything. The 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pros with M5 Pro or M5 Max, released in March 2026, are still on sale and still sit above it for memory, bandwidth, ports and displays. The OLED models arrive on the same day as the M6. So the M6 is the first step of a line-up with more steps than before, not its new top.
Starting fresh on a new Mac
A new Mac is a good moment to set up a few habits along with the apps. On the M6 model, Notchpals uses the notch: its characters slide down from it with a short reminder, then slide back. Setup happens in the notch too, with Blip walking you through it in four steps. If your crew includes Bolt, the Focus robot, it turns up on weekday mornings and asks for one priority.
BoltWorkday initialized. Select one priority. Not seven. I can count.
That visit comes once a day at most, in a morning window. Bolt waits while you are on a call and while a full screen app takes over the notch's display, and you can pause the whole crew from the menu bar.
Questions people ask
Does it have a touchscreen? No. Touch is only on the OLED models.
Is there a 16-inch version? No. The 16-inch comes with M5 Pro or M5 Max.
Does it have Thunderbolt 5? No, three Thunderbolt 4 ports.
Can you add memory later? No. Apple's store is clear that memory can't be added after purchase, so choose it when you order.
How many external displays? Up to two. Apple's tech specs list two at 6K and 60Hz, or one at up to 8K and 60Hz.
What macOS does it ship with? macOS Golden Gate.
Order checklist
Choose memory first: 16GB is the floor and 32GB is the ceiling. Then storage, starting at 1TB. Then the finish and the glass. Pre-orders are open now in 35 countries and regions, and the first deliveries are due on 6 November.
