M6 or M5 Pro MacBook Pro: which 14-inch to buy
The newer base chip or the older Pro chip? Both 14-inch MacBook Pros have a notch and a mini-LED screen. Ports, displays, memory and who each one suits.
Buy the M6 if your work is everyday work: email, documents, code, photo edits, calls, the occasional 4K video. Buy the M5 Pro if you plug in a lot of fast gear, run three external displays, edit video every day, or need more than 32GB of memory. The M6 is the newer chip, but the M5 Pro is the bigger one, and for long heavy jobs the bigger chip has more headroom.
Both are 14-inch MacBook Pros with a notch and a Liquid Retina XDR mini-LED screen, and they look the same from the front. What separates them is under the keyboard and in the ports.
Side by side
All figures come from Apple's tech specs pages.

Both have the same 72.4Wh battery and the same 3024 by 1964 screen, rated at 1,600 nits for HDR highlights. Both have HDMI, an SDXC slot, MagSafe 3 and a headphone jack.
Where the M6 wins
- Battery. Apple quotes up to 24 hours of video streaming and 16 hours of wireless web for the M6, against 22 and 14 for the M5 Pro, from the same size of battery.
- Weight. 3.4 lb against 3.5 lb. You will not feel the difference.
- Newer AI hardware. A dual 16-core Neural Engine, which Apple says is up to 1.9x faster than the M5's. Apple compares the M6 with the M5, not with the M5 Pro, so its figures do not tell you which of these two is faster at a given job.
- Position in the line-up. It is the entry MacBook Pro, so it sits below the M5 Pro.
Where the M5 Pro wins
Ports and displays
Thunderbolt 5 runs at up to 120Gb/s, three times the 40Gb/s of Thunderbolt 4. That matters with fast external SSDs, a Thunderbolt 5 dock or several high-resolution screens. Apple lists up to three external displays for the M5 Pro, for example three at 6K and 60Hz. The M6 stops at two. Thunderbolt 5 vs Thunderbolt 4 explains when the faster ports show, and how many external displays covers the combinations.
Memory
This is the one that decides it for many people. The M6 stops at 32GB. The M5 Pro goes to 64GB and reads it at 307GB/s, about 1.8 times the M6's best figure. Memory is a choice you make once, at order time. Virtual machines, large photo catalogs, big code bases with containers and local AI models all lean on it, so if 32GB already feels close, the M5 Pro is the safer machine for the next few years.
Video work
The two have the same media engine: one video encode engine and one ProRes encode and decode engine each. So the M5 Pro does not export video with extra hardware. What it brings to an editor is a larger GPU for effects and grading, more memory for long timelines, more bandwidth, a third display and Thunderbolt 5 for fast drives. If you need a second encode engine, that is the M5 Max.
Room for long jobs
A 15-core or 18-core CPU and a 16-core or 20-core GPU make a bigger chip than 12 and 12. For long renders, builds and exports, where the chip runs flat out for minutes at a time, that size is headroom. Apple's own M5 Pro figures are against the M4 Pro (up to 3.9x faster LLM prompt processing and up to 1.4x faster 3D rendering, Apple says), so they tell you about the generation step, not about the M6.
Who should buy which
M6: students, writers, developers who work mostly on the laptop, photographers who edit a few hundred images at a time, people who spend long days away from a socket, and anyone with one monitor or two.
M5 Pro: video editors, music producers with big sessions, people with three monitors on the desk, developers running virtual machines and containers, and anyone who knows 32GB will be tight.
If you are torn, check the M6 column of the table for three limits: two displays, 32GB and 40Gb/s ports. Has any of them stopped you in the last year? If yes, take the M5 Pro. If you had to look up what they mean, take the M6.
The 16-inch question
The M6 comes in the 14-inch size only. If you want the 16-inch screen, the M5 Pro is the way in, and 14 or 16-inch goes through that choice.
Charging
The M6 comes with a 70W adapter. The 14-inch M5 Pro gets 70W with the 15-core chip and 96W with the 18-core. Apple says both fast-charge with a 96W or higher USB-C power source, and both charge over MagSafe 3 or any of the three USB-C ports.
At a desk full of screens
The M5 Pro buyer is often the person with a monitor or three on the desk. If you use Notchpals, its characters stay in the built-in screen's notch even when an external display is set as the main one, so they keep the same place whatever you plug in. Close the lid and they move to a black island drawn at the top middle of the main display. One member of your crew is the host, and it greets you when you come back after 15 minutes or more away.
OttoYou're back! I did all the work while you were gone! Some. A bit.
That is Otto, the Tech care octopus, doing the host's job. Time away from the keyboard and mouse is not counted, so a long lunch does not trigger a pile of reminders when you sit back down.
Day-to-day feel
On an ordinary Tuesday you will not tell them apart. Both have the same display, the same 12MP Center Stage camera with Desk View, a six-speaker sound system, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, and both run macOS Golden Gate. The differences show up when you push: a video call plus a build plus an export at the same time, a drive that moves a few hundred gigabytes, a desk with three screens.
If you work from a couch or a train, the M6 gives you the longer battery quote. If you work at a desk with the charger plugged in, battery is not the number to optimize, and the M5 Pro's bandwidth, ports and ceilings are worth more.
The decision
Start with the work. If it fits in 32GB and two displays, the M6 gives you the longer battery quote and a newer chip. If it does not, the M5 Pro gives you room. Neither will feel slow on a normal day.
