Space black or silver MacBook Pro: how to choose

Both colors come on every current MacBook Pro. What Apple says about the space black finish, what it doesn't, and a simple way to choose.

Choose the color you like looking at, because that is the only thing the choice changes. Every current MacBook Pro comes in space black and in silver, and on Apple's tech specs pages the finish is a single line at the top: the chip options, memory, battery, ports and charger listed below it are the same for both.

The one thing Apple does say about the finishes is about space black. Its announcement for the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 describes a space black finish with an anodization seal for fewer fingerprints. That is a claim about fingerprints, not about scratches or fading. If fingerprints bother you, it tips the choice toward space black. If the Mac will travel loose in a bag, silver is the safer bet. Otherwise, go with your eye.

What is the same either way

Apple lists space black and silver on the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6, on the 14 and 16-inch models with M5 Pro or M5 Max, and on the OLED models with the PROLED XDR display. On each tech specs page the weight is listed by chip, such as 3.5 pounds for the 14-inch M5 Pro, never by color.

So none of these change with the color you pick:

  • The chip, memory and storage you can order.
  • The display. Apple doesn't list a screen difference between colors.
  • The ports, the battery and the adapter in the box.
  • The notch on the mini-LED models. It is part of the display and looks the same in both.

The question is only how you want the Mac to look on your desk, and how much wiping you are willing to do.

What Apple says about space black

Anodizing, in general, builds a hard oxide layer into the aluminum surface, and sealing closes the tiny pores in that layer at the end of the process. Apple doesn't explain its process beyond that phrase, and its claim is simply that the sealed space black finish shows fewer fingerprints.

Apple's pages say nothing about how the finish wears over time. There is no claim about scratch resistance, about how it handles a backpack or a sleeve, or about whether it ages differently from silver. Anyone who tells you now that one color is more durable is guessing. Owners will have real accounts in the months after the M6 arrives on 6 November 2026. Until then, treat the fingerprint claim as Apple's and everything else as unknown.

Space black, space gray and older models

If you are looking at a refurbished or second-hand MacBook Pro, the names matter, because space black is newer than many people think. Apple's tech specs pages list:

MacBook ProColors
14 and 16-inch, M1 Pro or M1 Max (2021)Silver, space gray
14-inch with M3 (November 2023)Space gray, silver
14 and 16-inch, M3 Pro or M3 Max (November 2023)Space black, silver
14-inch with M4, and 14 and 16-inch with M4 Pro or M4 Max (2024)Space black, silver
Every current model (2026)Space black, silver

Space gray is a lighter, mid-gray finish, and it is a different color from space black, not an older name for it. A listing that says "black" for a 2021 model is almost certainly space gray. The anodization seal claim above is from Apple's M6 announcement, so don't assume it describes every space black model before it.

Space black or silver, by how you use the Mac

Treat these as tendencies, not rules. The way dark and light finishes show wear is familiar from other products, but nothing here is measured on these specific Macs.

If you...Lean toward
Carry the Mac loose in a bag with keys and cablesSilver. A light surface tends to hide a light scratch, and a dark finish can show one as a pale line
Use it on a desk, in a sleeve, mostly in one placeEither. Space black if you like the look
Hate wiping fingerprintsSpace black, given Apple's seal claim, but wipe the lid and palm rests now and then anyway
Want the Mac to blend into a white desk or a bright roomSilver
Want it to recede on a dark desk or in a dim studioSpace black
Trade in or sell your Mac after a few yearsEither. Condition matters more than color

If you can see both in a shop, do that. A color on a screen is not a color on an aluminum lid under your own lights.

A sleeve or a case changes the answer. If the Mac lives in a sleeve in the bag and in a stand on the desk, the lid is rarely seen. The part that matters then is the keyboard deck and palm rests, where fingerprints and wear show most. How to clean a MacBook screen and keyboard has the safe way to wipe them.

The notch and the island look the same in both

On the mini-LED models, the notch at the top of the screen is the same black cutout whichever color you pick, because it sits in the display, not in the lid. The OLED model swaps the notch for the Dynamic Island, again in either color. Which MacBook Pro has the Dynamic Island sorts out which is which. The color is the one decision here that changes nothing on screen.

A simple way to decide

Keep the process short. There is no wrong answer, only a preference.

  1. Pick the model first, by the work you do. Which MacBook Pro to buy sorts them by use.
  2. Then pick the color you like. If you can't decide, take silver if the Mac will be carried loose, and space black if it mostly stays on a desk and you would rather see fewer fingerprints.
  3. Add a sleeve either way. It protects the finish more than either color does.
  4. Check delivery dates for both. Apple shows them by configuration at checkout, and if one color ships sooner and you are torn, that settles it.

You will live with either for years, and nothing about the Mac's speed, battery or ports depends on which you choose.

Where Notchpals fits

Whichever lid you pick, you will spend far more time looking at the screen than at the finish, and the notch is where Notchpals lives. On the M6 and on the M5 Pro and M5 Max models with the notch, its reminder characters slide down from that black cutout, so they look the same against a space black Mac as a silver one. One of your crew is the host, who says good morning the first time you sit down at the Mac each day, between 5 AM and noon. Maple, a red panda who wants you warm, fed and well rested, is one of the Meals characters and a gentle choice for that job.

MapleMorning! Warm up first, okay? A warm drink is a cuddle for your insides.

Maple, Meals: Good morning, 5:00 AM to 12:00 PM

So pick the finish for your desk and your bag. The crew in the notch will look the same either way.
