Dynamic Island on Mac: what it is and which Macs get it

Apple's Mac Dynamic Island is only on the new PROLED XDR MacBook Pro, 14 and 16-inch, from 6 November 2026. What it does and how it differs from the notch.

Yes, the Mac has a Dynamic Island now, but only one Mac has it. It comes on the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display, the 14-inch and 16-inch models with an M5 Pro or M5 Max chip that Apple announced on 28 October 2026. On that Mac the island takes the notch's place at the top of the screen. Pre-orders are open, and deliveries and in-store availability start on Friday, 6 November 2026.

Every other Mac stays as it is. The MacBook Air and the mini-LED MacBook Pros, the new M6 model among them, keep their notch, while the desktops and the MacBook Neo have neither. Which Macs have a Dynamic Island sorts the whole line-up into a table. This post is about the island itself: what Apple put in it, how it differs from the notch, and how much is still unknown.

What Apple put in the island

Apple calls the Dynamic Island "the home for Spotlight, Live Activities, and Siri AI". It has also named the things you can do there:

  • Ask Siri AI a question.
  • Answer a phone call.
  • Control music, and tap the island to pause a song.
  • Accept an AirDrop request.
  • Keep an eye on Live Activities. MacRumors, summarising Apple, says they "stay visible while you work in other apps".

On a Mac today, each of those jobs happens somewhere else: Siri in the menu bar, music in Control Center, calls and AirDrop requests as notifications. The island gathers them into one spot at the top of the screen, where your eyes already pass all day. Apple hasn't said whether apps from other developers will get a place in it.

Spotlight comes with a condition

Spotlight moves into the island only when Siri AI is available and enabled. So whether Siri AI is on decides a good part of what the island does.

Siri AI is the new, more conversational assistant in macOS Golden Gate, the macOS that ships with this Mac, and it is built into Spotlight and into context menus. Apple lists its limits plainly. It is in beta. It works in English, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. It is not for users under 13, and its server-side features have daily limits.

So the island you end up with depends partly on your language and your settings. If Siri AI isn't offered to you, or you leave it off, Spotlight stays out of the island, and so does Siri AI.

How it differs from the notch

The notch is a gap. It holds the camera, the menu bar runs around it, and nothing is ever drawn inside it. The island is somewhere things happen. The new screen is also the first Mac display with touch, so you can tap the island directly, and pausing a song with a tap is one of Apple's own examples.

Early hands-on reports add a few impressions. Tom's Guide says the notch is gone, "replaced by a smaller Dynamic Island", and that while music plays, the player shrinks into a little window at the top of the display until a tap brings it back. Reports passed on by TidBITS say the camera now sits in a small hole-punch cutout and that the menu bar "no longer has a large chunk missing from its middle". These are reporters' first looks, not Apple's description, and nobody outside Apple has lived with the Mac yet.

Where the idea comes from

The name comes from the iPhone. The Dynamic Island arrived on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max in September 2022 and reached every iPhone 15 model in 2023. On the phone it is a pill-shaped area around the front camera and Face ID sensors that grows and changes shape for alerts, Live Activities and controls.

The Mac version keeps the idea and changes the details Apple has given. On the Mac it is also where Spotlight and Siri AI live. You can reach it with touch on this screen. And there is no Face ID around it: the Mac keeps Touch ID.

The Mac that comes with it

You can't buy the island on its own. It is one piece of a larger redesign:

  • The screen is a tandem OLED panel, two layers of self-lit pixels, which Apple brands PROLED XDR.
  • Touch is new to the Mac. Apple names swipe to scroll, pinch to zoom, drag and drop, double-tap a window to fill the screen and flick a window to tile it. The keyboard and trackpad work alongside it.
  • The camera is a 12MP Center Stage camera.

The PROLED models cost more than the comparable mini-LED MacBook Pros, which have the same M5 Pro and M5 Max chips and a notch. So the island is rarely the whole decision. The screen and Touch are the bigger changes, and they are what you pay for.

What Apple hasn't said

Quite a lot, for something this visible. Apple hasn't given the island's size, shape or exact position. It hasn't said whether you can hide it, what it does in full screen apps or with an external display as your main screen, or how the menu bar icons fit around it. Mac Dynamic Island: what we know keeps the confirmed facts and the open questions in separate lists, and it is the page to check before you count the island as a reason to buy.

If your Mac doesn't have one

No setting adds the island to an older Mac, and Apple hasn't announced anything of the kind. Its jobs are still there on every Mac: Spotlight from Command-Space, music in Control Center, calls and AirDrop requests as notifications. How to get a Dynamic Island on your Mac goes through the honest options.

The top of the screen on those Macs can still do something else. Notchpals is a different idea from Apple's island: not calls or music, but a crew of characters who come out of the notch now and then to suggest a glass of water, a stretch, an eye break or an early night. On a Mac with no notch at all, such as an iMac or a MacBook Neo, it draws a black island of its own at the center of the top edge. It keeps out of the way while your camera or microphone is on and while a full screen app has the screen.

BlipLook twenty feet away for twenty seconds! What do you see? Is it amazing?

Blip, Eyes: Eye break, through the day

Blip, the alien who looks after your eyes, is in every crew.

The short version

One Mac has the Dynamic Island: the PROLED XDR MacBook Pro, 14 or 16-inch, with M5 Pro or M5 Max, from 6 November 2026. Apple has said what goes in it (Siri AI, Spotlight, calls, music, AirDrop and Live Activities) and hasn't said how big it is or whether you can hide it. Every other Mac keeps the top of the screen it has today.
