BlogDynamic Island on Mac

Is there a Dynamic Island in macOS Tahoe? No, here's why

macOS Tahoe has no Dynamic Island, but it shows iPhone Live Activities in the menu bar. How to set that up, and where the real island comes from.

No, macOS Tahoe does not have a Dynamic Island. No Mac running Tahoe shows one, and nothing in System Settings turns one on. What Tahoe does have is a feature that covers part of the same ground: Live Activities from your iPhone appear in your Mac's menu bar, once the Mac and the iPhone are set up for iPhone Mirroring.

The real Dynamic Island on a Mac is hardware. It comes with Apple's MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display, unveiled in the last week of October 2026, which ships with macOS Golden Gate. The island takes the place of the notch on that model, so no software update, to Tahoe or anything after it, will add one to an older Mac.

What macOS Tahoe has instead

Tahoe was the first version of macOS to bring iPhone Live Activities to the Mac. A Live Activity follows one thing that is happening now and will end soon: a delivery, a ride, a flight, a score, a timer. On an iPhone it can show on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island. On a Mac with Tahoe, it shows in the menu bar.

Apple's support page on managing iPhone notifications and Live Activities on Mac describes it like this. Depending on how much space the menu bar has, you see a compact icon or a compact view, and you click it for more detail. If your iPhone is nearby, double-clicking the Live Activity opens iPhone Mirroring.

It is not an island. It doesn't grow out of the camera, it doesn't sit in the notch, and it shares the menu bar with everything else up there. Live Activities on Mac covers which ones are worth keeping.

How to set it up

These steps follow Apple's support page.

  1. Set up iPhone Mirroring. It has to connect at least once. After that, Live Activities from your iPhone appear on your Mac.
  2. Keep your iPhone on. It must be turned on, but it doesn't need to be nearby. Your Mac receives Live Activities even when you aren't using iPhone Mirroring.
  3. Check the setting. Open System Settings > Notifications, click "Allow notifications from iPhone", and make sure "Allow Live Activities from iPhone" is on. This option needs macOS Tahoe or later.
  4. Pick the iPhone, if you have more than one. This choice only appears when more than one eligible iPhone is nearby. In recent versions of macOS Tahoe it is under System Settings > General > "AirDrop & Continuity". In earlier versions it is under System Settings > Desktop & Dock. Either way, you pick from an iPhone pop-up menu.

Apple adds that some of these settings appear only after you have used iPhone Mirroring successfully with that iPhone. If you can't find a toggle, that is the first thing to check.

Turning it off

  • All Live Activities on the Mac: System Settings > Notifications, then turn off "Allow Live Activities from iPhone".
  • One Live Activity on the Mac: click it in the menu bar, move the pointer over it, and click the close button in its corner. That closes only that activity.
  • One app, on both devices: on the iPhone, open Settings > Apps, choose the app, then Live Activities, and turn it off. Apple says this controls Live Activities on both the iPhone and the Mac.

What the real Dynamic Island adds

The PROLED MacBook Pro comes in two sizes, each with an M5 Pro or M5 Max chip. Pre-orders opened on 28 October, and the first deliveries and store sales begin on 6 November 2026.

Apple's list for its island: questions for Siri AI, phone calls, music controls, AirDrop requests, and a tap to pause a song. Spotlight moves in too, when Siri AI is available and on. And MacRumors, summarizing Apple, says Live Activities remain on screen while you use other apps.

Compared with Tahoe's menu bar route, the island is a dedicated spot, instead of one more icon next to the clock, Wi-Fi and battery. How it shares the top of the screen with a crowded menu bar is something Apple hasn't said. The Mac Dynamic Island compared with the iPhone's covers the differences in more detail.

Apple hasn't said which Golden Gate features need the new MacBook Pro. Only the Dynamic Island is tied to it. Whether older Macs get Siri AI is a question Apple's release leaves open.

If your Mac has a notch today, it keeps it. That goes for the MacBook Air from M2 on, and for every notched MacBook Pro, including the new M6 model and the mini-LED models from March 2026. A Mac with no notch at all, such as an M1 MacBook Air, a 13-inch MacBook Pro, an iMac or a Mac mini, stays as it is too.

Should you update to get a Dynamic Island

Updating will not give your Mac an island. If you want Live Activities on the Mac you have, turn on the iPhone setting above. If you want the island itself, you need the new hardware.

Updates are still worth installing for their own sake, for security fixes and bug fixes as much as features. Should you install macOS updates right away covers the timing.

Where Notchpals fits

Notchpals runs on macOS 14 or later, so Tahoe is fine. Its Tech care area looks after the Mac itself. Otto, an octopus who is always juggling too much, notices when your Mac has gone more than a week without a restart, and comes by once, between 9 AM and 6 PM.

Otto, Tech care: Restart, after a week without a restart

It is a good moment to let a waiting update install. Press Done when you have restarted, or Later if you are mid-task, and Otto comes back once, 20 minutes on.

The short version

macOS Tahoe has no Dynamic Island. It shows iPhone Live Activities in the menu bar after you set up iPhone Mirroring, and you control that in System Settings > Notifications. The island itself arrives with macOS Golden Gate on the new OLED MacBook Pro, and no software update adds it to other Macs.
